Grigori Chukhrai returns to the San Francisco Festival with another story of love during crisis. The mood of last year's Ballad of a Soldier is maintained as the now-famous director describes a young woman's tortuous ordeal of waiting. She waits for her love, the father of her coming child, to return to their life together. The face of despair finally appears when it seems that all hope of his return is lost. Chukhrai, an expert at recreating human emotions, leads his characters from the depth of their despair to an ultimate bright conclusion. The film gained first prize in Moscow, 1961.
